A vacation in Duluth Minnesota was frequently my family's destination for our vacation when I was a kid. I laugh as we look back at old pictures. We were often dressed in terrible parkas. Do you remember the kind that were gray or army green with fake fur around the hood and mile long zippers? (Chris calls them snorkels! =) Who says that 70's clothing was terrible!?
Many times it was cold and rainy, except for a summer trip when we stayed at some little mom and pop cabin resort with a bed that had a machine on it that you could put a quarter into. We didn't have much money, but I remember Mom giving us a quarter, putting it in and letting us jump on the bed. Those were the good ol' days!
A vacation in Duluth Minnesota was close enough to home that we could travel to it in a few hours, and the family would likely stay together in the car for the entire trip! I still remember the big bridge, the boat tour and the waves of the bay that splashed up and looked like root beer (all brown and frothy).
We trampeled over the Lake Superior shores before the new Canal Park and Lakewalk were designed. But there were still those awesome lighthouses leading into Duluth Harbor, big rocks and lots of driftwood. We always took a pile home as souvenirs. Remember the taconite pellets? I recall walking over lots of railroad tracks and picking up a bucket full of them to remember our trip by. My father still has them in a jar somewhere.
A vacation in Duluth Minnesota sure left some wonderful memories, probably some of the better times we had together as a family.
